FROM CATHY: This was a wonderful workshop. Michelle is a fantastic singer, engaging teacher, and a lovely person. All the attendees were very happy!
"I have loved Michelle Nicolle's singing perpetually and without ceasing since first I heard her. Michelle is a singer born to sing, born to charm, enlighten and seduce through music. I only wish she lived in the States somewhere so I could manage to hear her more often." Kurt Elling, April 2012

"Hello interested vocal workshop attendees! I’ve just spent 3 amazing days inNew Orleans at the Jazz Education Network (JEN) Conference, where I was lucky enough to perform…and I’m overwhelmed by the positive and warm responses I received from my fellow educators, musicians, and students who attended. I’m even more excited not to have been offered the chance to share my “brand” of jazz storytelling and improvisation with some lovely L.A. people! We will definitely have FUN!”
Michelle Nicolle Vocal Workshop: 2020 … Michelle holds a Bachelor of Education, an Associate Diploma of Jazz (University of Adelaide) and currently teaches at University of Melbourne, VCASS (Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School)andMonash University.Since 1998 she has conducted Masterclasses and Workshops all over Australia, and in Singapore, Taiwan and at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music (London),JEN Conference(New Orleans 2017), Frost School of Music(University of Miami 2017 ),University Of North Texas2019, Oceanside Jazz Festival 2019 (Mira Costa, USA), International Jazz Voice Conference2015 and 2019 (Finland).
As a teacher and performer Michelle will be advocating for the vocalist as an equally respected and valued musical member of an ensemble.
For this workshop Michelle will work through a tune with the class and demonstrate her method of fully exploring a song for performance and improvisation. She will invite individual singers to experiment with the techniques and sing for the group.
Only when the singer is absolutely independent in the song can they open a dialogue between themselves and the band. To be independent means to maintain the key centre/s, create and maintain the time feel and traverse the harmonic territory with certainty of pitch and meaning. The interaction which allows the music to live in the moment is only really possible when all the musicians are equal and contributing and supportive in the group conversation.
The techniques Michelle will outline and share with the audience will include:
- anchoring the key centre/s
- targeting chord tones throughout the entire vocal range
- using the existing melody to create new melodic and rhythmic possibilities
- embodying the time whilst singing and when not
- developing a solo that both engages an audience and maintains the structural/aesthetic integrity of the jazz standard and it’s story.
