The End of a Party!
The Beginning of a new one!
Well, every 12 years, I think one should contemplate moving on! And so, I have...and I am!
The Wed night jazz jam session is ending. It really has been a wonderful creation. It started at the Sportsmen's Lodge in Studio City.
Within 3 months, it was a happening scene. A little PR, lots of word-of-mouth, great players, great singers...pro's and amateurs alike, came in and it was easy to get up and have fun. Great music was played! Eddie Olivieri was our house pianist, Jack LeCompte the drummer, and the bassists changed over the years...Harvey Newmark started us out for a few of those years, Bill Markus was a consistent player too. But wow, we had so many people come through there and play, so many.
People showed up like it was church. Committed amateurs became professionals. Professionals showed up and played and sang their asses off! We even grew an organization out of it, called The California Pop & Council, which lasted about 5 years, and put on many wonderful shows, including special annual shows dedicated to Mr. Dini Clarke, Mr. Howlett Smith, and Mr. Herb Jeffries. We had a ball.
So many friendships were made. Jobs were gotten. And solid friends made their way out of this life to the beyond. Don Jay, Robert Walker, Tom Davies, Ed Powell, Sidno Garner. Friends who were part of the jam, who will live forever in our hearts.
This coming Wednesday, May 1st, will be the LAST jam session.

is Tuesday Nite R&B at The Gate (find us on Facebook!) where you can come and actually DANCE to an 8 piece horn band, playing old school R&B, like Soul Train! You should definitely try to make it down if you like this kind of music hang!
